Why.

Incidental Architecture exists to design and support the delivery of great buildings. We love beautiful buildings, and elegant details, but the core belief of the practice is that buildings are at their greatest when they serve the lives of the people and communities that inhabit them. In this way, while the task of architecture is to design things, things should be incidental to life.

This core principle leads us down some important paths of every project we work on:

Simplicity and Efficiency

Buildings are inherently complicated and costly. The best solutions inevitably tend to be the ones in which most is achieved with the least.

Environmental Performance

All our projects have ESD principles considered at every level. This includes all the basics like ethical material choices, good orientation, ventilation, shading and passive solar design. It also includes consideration of optimised active heating, cooling and energy generation systems. Incidental Architecture is an active member of the Alternative Technology Association and regularly gives time to promote sustainable building practice.

Community Building

One of the great joys of building is that no one person can do everything themselves. We delight in the community that comes together to make every project. Clients, engineers, landscape architects, builders, fabricators and suppliers are all valuable contributors to the end product. We embrace the dictum that a good idea is a good idea, no matter who had it.

Architecture for All People

The principles of good architecture should benefit all people, and it is often the case that those who could potentially benefit most from well considered buildings are those who are least able to afford them. As well as custom designed bespoke projects (where we are continually sharpening our skills), Incidental continues to be involved in pre-designing houses to deliver good architecture to a broader suburban population. Incidental also has a long standing commitment to support NFP's in Australia and overseas.

It's a Journey

Building is a privilege. One that provides a unique opportunity to create something of lasting value to both the users of the end product and the community that are involved in its creation.
